Description

The Head Counselor is responsible for the development of Leaders-in-Training (LIT’s) throughout the summer in and out of a classroom setting. The Alliance is looking for an individual with a background in education, youth development, experiential learning, STEM, the arts, athletics/movement, teambuilding, weekly field trips and/or Jewish learning. Their primary goal is to support and encourage Leaders-In-Training in their growth and development. The Head Counselor is also responsible for assisting the Camp Director in any needs which may include programming, food service, and staffing.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead a group of LIT’s, in structured and unstructured activities, acting as guardian, friend, mentor, and disciplinarian to all

  • Lead and assist in leading small and large group activities

  • Developing curriculum for LIT program

  • Serve as a role model for all campers, acting properly while participating in all required activities with an enthusiastic attitude, including swimming, with the campers

  • Maintain all JCC standards, values and rules.

  • Communicate regularly with parents and the Director to ensure consistency

  • Set up, clean up and maintenance of all indoor and outdoor spaces and equipment

  • Actively supervise and ensure LIT and camper safety at all times

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of LIT’s and campers served

  • Maintain statistical records including daily attendance and meal counts

  • Attend meetings and trainings as needed.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude.

  • Ability to learn and enforce the camps safety and operating rules.

  • Must attend staff meetings and orientation during the summer season.

  • Demonstrated experience with the Alliance’s core values and a clear commitment to them

  • Familiar in education, youth development, experiential learning, mentoring, STEM, the arts, athletics/movement, teambuilding, and/or Jewish learning.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

  • Working knowledge of the growth and development of middle school age children

  • Strong oral communications skills

  • Ability to set priorities and handle multiple needs.

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to work closely with others in a team environment

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Previous experience working with children preferred.

  • Must pass reference checks and background screenings, which include fingerprint check and sex offender registry check.

  • Must have or willingness to obtain Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to swim and pass a swim test.

  • Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities.

  • Able to maintain attention and high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to spend majority the of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions.
