Position Overview
The Summer Mental Health & Inclusion Specialist is a key leadership role supporting the success of all Aaron Family JCC summer camps, including traditional day camp, specialty camps, early childhood camp, sports camps, and teen programs.
Beginning in early May on a part-time basis, this role focuses on preparation, family communication, and staff training. Starting May 25, the position transitions to full-time, providing daily on-site leadership and support throughout the camp season.
This specialist partners closely with Camp Directors and the Chief Impact Officer to ensure that every camper and staff member experiences a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment rooted in belonging and emotional well-being.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Summer (Part-Time: May 1 – May 24)
- Connect with families to gather relevant information and prepare for camper success.
- Develop and helpfacilitatemental and emotional health components of staff training.
- Review camper profiles and collaborate with Camp Directors on support plans.
- Prepare tools, documentation systems, and support strategies for summer implementation.
Summer Session (Full-Time: May 25 – August 7)
Camper Support & Intervention
- Provide direct support to campers experiencing emotional, behavioral, or social challenges across all camp programs.
- Respond to moments of dysregulation or distress with professionalism and care.
- Develop and implement individualized support strategies in partnership with camp leadership.
- Assistwith transitions, peer conflicts, and group dynamics.
Staff Coaching & Training
- Provide ongoing coaching to counselors, unit heads, and specialty staff.
- Equip staff with practical tools to support campers effectively.
- Serve as a visible and accessible leadership presence throughout the camp day.
Family Partnership
- Maintain communication with parents asappropriate duringthe summer.
- Collaborate with families to implement consistent behavioral and emotional support strategies.
Program Inclusion & Adaptation
- Partner with Camp Directors to modify programs or activities as needed to ensure accessibility and inclusion.
- Support inclusive practices across all JCC camp environments.
- Contribute to positive staff morale and a healthy camp culture.
Documentation & Accountability
- Maintainaccurateand confidential documentation related to camper support plans and communications.
- Track strategies and follow-up to ensure consistency and accountability.
Leadership Collaboration
- Work in close partnership with Camp Directors and the Chief Impact Officer.
- Participate as a member of the summer camp leadership team.
- Maintain flexibility and responsiveness in a fast-paced camp environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s orMaster’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Education, or related field.
- Experience working with children and adolescents in camp, school, or similar settings.
- Strong knowledge of child development and mental, social, and emotional health.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to documentation.
- Empathy, patience, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a leadership team.
- Comfortable operating in a dynamic, high-energy camp setting.
It is expected that the Summer Mental Health & Inclusion Specialist will be a team player as part of the JCC Professional Staff. He/she is expected to be aware of the JCC Mission Statement and work within the frameworks of that mission. Responsibilities of the job may be changed as the needs of the JCC and/or community change.
