The Aquatics Director is responsible for the vision, goals, programming, and daily operations of the Aquatics Department. The Director will lead program development and implementation, staffing, recruitment, employee development, training, sales, financial management, facilities management, and extensive member interaction.
The Director is part of the JCC Leadership and Supervision Team, connecting Aquatics programs to the JCC through participation in supervisory training, staff communication meetings, leadership meetings, and program team meetings. A typical work week is Sunday- Thursday.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Supervision
- Supervise Aquatics Manager, including day-to-day management, weekly individual supervision meetings, professional development opportunities, and performance management.
- In collaboration with the Aquatics Manager, hire, train, and develop all aquatics staff, complete appropriate paperwork for new hire, rehire, change, or termination, and provide all documentation to HR team in a timely fashion.
- Lead ongoing training, including but not limited to staff in-services, CPR/AED/First Aid Classes, Lifeguard Classes, Recertification classes, etc.
- Interact with employees in a positive and professional manner, documenting all necessary interactions and relative information.
- Complete initial and annual reviews of direct reports and other designated department staff.
- Understand and adhere to all JCC Policies and Procedures.
Programming
- Ensure consistent high-quality programming is being developed and delivered in the following areas:
- Parent Child Classes
- Gan Ami Summer Swim Program
- Group Swim Lessons
- Adaptive Swim Program
- Triggerfish Swim Team
- Youth Diving Program
- Water Polo
- Adult Swim Lessons
- Masters Swim Club
- All other aquatics program and events
- Work in collaboration with the Marketing team to ensure program journal information is submitted and programs are being promoted as appropriate to achieve enrollment goals.
- Work in collaboration with the Aquatics Manager to develop new programming that meets the needs of members and community.
- Ensure the highest level of communication with members and program users.
Partnerships
- Ensure that accurate, up-to-date schedules are posted and shared on the JCC’s website.
- Update schedule AP as appropriate for schedule changes.
- Manage internal partners’ needs for space, including but not limited to: Camps, Gan Ami, Wellness 360, Kids Center, Vacation Days, Chaverim, Community Pool Party.
- Manage external partners’ needs for space, including but not limited to: WITS, Froedtert, Portal, Road to Rainbow, Birthday Parties, Pool rentals, etc.
- Create contracts and invoices for pool rentals and ensure that billing is completed in a timely manner.
- Manage all community partnerships as it relates to Lifeguard Classes including but not limited: to Nicolet HS and the Urban Ecology Center.
- Communicate all necessary information relating to the pool to the MJ Federation Team.
Budgets & Financials
- Develop annual budget for Aquatics.
- Present budgets during annual budget meeting.
- Monitor monthly financial reports and communicate questions or concerns by established deadlines.
- Develop annual enrollment and revenue goals for each program area.
- Maintain awareness of revenue for all Aquatics programs and the ways in which they impact overall yearly budgets.
- Assist in the development of a sales plan for all Aquatics areas.
- Manage monthly Aquatics credit card statements and ensure that all direct reports have submitted their information on time.
- Oversee the credit card purchases and invoices for each respective department and ensure that purchasing aligns with budgets.
Direct Service
- Teach or facilitate any Aquatics program/class/lesson as needed, which may include evenings and weekends.
- Assume lifeguard role for shifts as needed, which may include early morning, evening, and weekends.
- In collaboration with the Aquatics Manager, plan and facilitate all staff trainings, included but not limited to lifeguard in-services, swim instructor in-services, etc.
- Run a minimum of 3 American Red Cross Lifeguard classes per year, may include recertification classes.
- Assume role of MOD a minimum of 2 weekday shifts and one weekend shift per quarter.
- Assume weekly, weekend, and holiday MOD shifts as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Ensure that the facility meets state code standards, including maintaining a clean and safe environment.
- Assume responsibilities for JCC special events, as required.
- Promote and practice the JCC’s Positive Rules of Communication.
- Participate in supervisory training and professional development sessions, as required.
- Adhere to and ensure that the Senior Program Director is apprised of any concerns, challenges, or other potential impacts to the JCC.
- Perform other duties and execute additional responsibilities, as required.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements (KSA’s)
- Demonstrated track record of managing sales, operations, group programming, and customer service of a Aquatics facility.
- Demonstrated track record of careful planning and preparation for programs and events.
- Demonstrated understanding of Aquatics programs designed for participants beginning at 6 months old.
- Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to promote high standards of program delivery and professional excellence.
- Ability to respond effectively to constructive criticism and provide constructive feedback to staff.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer software: including MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; customer service orientation with specific strength in diplomacy and discretion strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, with other staff members, members, and community participants.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience of in a leadership role within the aquatic industry.
- Red Cross Lifeguard certification required, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification required, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- Certified Pool & Spa Operator (CPO) Certification preferred, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
- Red Cross certified WSI, WIST, LGIT, and First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor preferred.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee will be occasionally required to sit; reach above shoulders; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts.
- Indoors and outdoors – may include extreme weather conditions.
- Occasionally loud.
- A typical work week is Sunday – Thursday.
Flexible schedule – may include extended workdays, weekends, and holidays.
