Position Overview
The Alpert JCC is a multigenerational community center seeking a strategic, hands-on Director of Fitness & Membership Experience to grow membership and expand high-quality fitness, aquatics, recreation, and wellness programs that drive engagement, retention, and revenue.
This is a high-profile leadership position, and the Director will play an integral role in driving strategy and execution. We seek a leader who will elevate the member experience in a "Ritz-Carlton" manner, strengthen programs, and build sustainable earned revenue while fostering connection and belonging. They will also provide strong staff leadership and ensure financial performance through clear strategy, execution, and regular reporting.
Core Responsibilities
Membership Growth & Revenue Development
- Set KPI's and lead strategies to increase new member acquisition, retention, and engagement
- Develop and execute initiatives that drive membership sales, program participation, and upgrades
- Respond to Member's concerns, suggestions and complaints in a timely (24-48 hours), professional and consistent manner.
- Track and analyze membership and program performance to guide growth decisions
- Build relationships with current and prospective members through outreach and on-site engagement
- Promote cross-participation across fitness, aquatics, and Jewish Long Beach programs
Fitness, Aquatics, Recreation & Wellness
- Oversee all fitness center, group exercise, personal training, and liaison with aquatics programs run by Premiere, and wellness initiatives
- Design and launch innovative programs that respond to community demand and generate revenue
- Expand specialty offerings such as personal training, swim instruction, youth programs, and fitness challenges
- Supervise, recruit, train, and retain high-quality instructors, trainers, and program staff
- Monitor industry trends and competitor offerings to keep programs dynamic and competitive
Operations & Financial Stewardship
- Develop and manage departmental budgets with a focus on growth and profitability
- Monitor revenue, participation, and expenses to ensure strong financial performance
- Oversee facilities, schedules, safety, equipment, and daily operations across fitness and aquatics
- Implement systems for sales tracking, customer service, program evaluation, and reporting
Team Leadership & Culture
- Hire, supervise, coach, and evaluate fitness and membership staff
- Build a performance-driven, service-oriented team culture
- Ensure all certifications, safety training, and compliance requirements are met
- Lead ongoing training, communication, and accountability processes to set and achieve annual and long-term goals
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Partner with Marketing to promote membership and program growth
- Develop new and expand existing relationships with organizations and businesses in the Jewish and greater community that will enhance the visibility of programs.
- Serve as a member of JLB's leadership team
- Act as an ambassador for JLB's mission, values, and community
- Represents the organization in appropriate meetings and at interagency and professional conferences.
- Responsibilities may be changed as the needs of the organization change. This would be done with prior consultation with the Chief Operating Officer.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Sports Management, Athletic Training Education, or Health & Wellness Promotion required; Master's degree preferred
- 3-5+ years of demonstrated success in a leadership role within a gym, fitness or membership operations setting
- Demonstrated success driving program growth and earned revenue
- Supervisory and team leadership experience
- Fitness and/or aquatics certifications preferred (or ability to obtain)
- Strong business, customer service, and relationship-building skills
- CPR, AED, First Aid, and lifeguard certifications preferred (or ability to obtain)
- Experience in community-based or nonprofit settings a plus
- Proficiency in MS Office products and database software preferred
