Principal Responsibilities:
The Part-Time Head Basketball Coach is responsible for the leadership, development, and oversight of the H.E.S. Basketball Program. This role blends on-court coaching, private sports-specific training, and program management, while partnering closely with the Sports Director to ensure a high-quality, mission-aligned basketball experience.
The position includes 12-15 hours per week of scheduled classes, trainings, and private lessons, with additional hours as required for administrative responsibilities, travel/AAU teams, leagues, and tournaments.
Minimum Qualifications:
Basketball Coaching & Player Development
- Lead basketball classes, team practices, and skill development sessions.
- Provide private and small-group sports-specific basketball training.
- Develop structured, age-appropriate training plans focused on fundamentals, skill progression, teamwork, and character development.
- Create a positive, disciplined, and inclusive environment aligned with H.E.S. values
- Evaluate athlete development and communicate progress with families when appropriate.
Program Leadership & Ownership
- Serve as the primary leader of the H.E.S. Basketball Program in collaboration with the Sports Director.
- Establish program philosophy, standards, and coaching expectations.
- Support program growth, quality, and consistency across all basketball offerings.
- Act as a visible ambassador for H.E.S. basketball within the community.
Travel / AAU Team Development
- Lead or oversee travel and AAU basketball teams.
- Coordinate tryouts, team formation, practice schedules, and competition calendars.
- Travel with teams as required for league play and tournaments.
- Build and maintain relationships with leagues, tournament organizers, and partner organizations.
In-House Leagues & Tournaments
- Support the planning and execution of in-house basketball leagues.
- Assist with scheduling, rules implementation, playoffs, and championship events.
- Help organize and staff tournaments, showcases, and basketball events hosted by H.E.S.
- Ensure a high-quality experience for athletes, families, and officials.
Administrative & Operational Responsibilities
- Assist with program scheduling, facility usage, and gym coordination.
- Maintain accurate rosters, waivers, attendance, and compliance records.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with athletes, parents, staff, and administration.
- Support marketing, enrollment, and outreach efforts as needed.
- Collaborate with the Sports Director on budgeting, staffing, and program planning.
Staff Support & Development
- Assist in recruiting, training, and mentoring assistant coaches.
- Provide guidance and leadership to coaching staff to ensure program consistency.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience coaching basketball at the youth, high school, AAU, or collegiate level.
- Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, player development, and team systems.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a part-time leadership role.
- Availability for evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Experience in a community center, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization preferred.
- Experience with private training, camps, clinics, and leagues preferred.
- Coaching certifications and/or CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
