The Barshop JCC of San Antonio Texas (JCC) seeks a collaborative and community minded leader to provide strategic vision and direction for the JCC. This individual must have excellent business and operational acumen to oversee an annual operating budget in excess of $6 million and a high performing tenured staff team.
For more than 135 years, the JCC has developed an outstanding reputation as a “birth through life” institution, providing exceptional programs and services to individuals and families of all ages and stages from both the Jewish and wider communities. The JCC inspires Jewish Journeys and provides countless opportunities for San Antonians to Live Up® – to their goals, their aspirations, and their potential – through a variety of programming and community involvement for multiple generations.
Located on the San Antonio Jewish community’s campus in the heart of San Antonio, the JCC provides full-service programming in its 122,000-square-foot facility includes health and wellness, sports and recreation, arts and culture, education, enrichment, and so much more.
About the Barshop JCC
The JCC features a 25-meter, eight-lane, and family recreational pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, group exercise studios, a tennis clubhouse, and 7 lighted courts. There is a 14-classroom NAEYC-accredited early childhood complex and 3 age-appropriate playgrounds, which house what is known to be the top early childhood program in the city. Rounding out the facilities is an auditorium, kosher kitchens, a senior center, youth lounge, an afterschool center with its own playground, as well as a double gymnasium and ball fields. The facilities enable participation in a full complement of programs and services designed to meet the needs of people of all ages and all walks of life.
The JCC prides itself in being a fiscally responsible organization. The partnership that exists between volunteer and professional leadership is an important aspect of the agency's ability to grow and develop and to adjust to challenging circumstances. The average staff tenure today is almost 15 years and staff are valued and appreciated and key partners in the JCC’s success.
About the San Antonio Jewish Community
San Antonio is home to a welcoming, family-oriented, and committed Jewish community of over 9,000. The Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community changed the course of the community trajectory 24 years ago when the Jewish Federation, the JCC, Jewish Family Service and the Day School relocated to one central location and became the principal hub of activity for most major events and activities. Synagogues in San Antonio are an important aspect of community life that represent all segments of Jewish culture, including an orthodox K-8 day school. The community also claims one of the finest Holocaust Memorial Museums in the southwest.

San Antonio is home to the NBA San Antonio Spurs, as well as five universities including the University of Texas at San Antonio, St. Mary’s University and Trinity University, as well as a multi-campus community college system. It hosts an annual 2-week Fiesta celebration and has a 28-mile continuous park that runs from the northernmost part of the city to the San Antonio missions.

The CEO Position
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Barshop Jewish Community Center of San Antonio reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s operations, consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. The CEO is responsible for partnering with the Board to establish the long-term strategic direction for the JCC and to formulate policy. The CEO leads an excellent and highly tenured staff and represents the JCC in the Jewish and overall community. The JCC CEO is also the general managing partner of the Campus and in this role provides overall leadership for the Campus, working closely with the Campus Operations Director and the Tenant Partner Agencies, leading their quarterly board meetings and overseeing campus financials.

The CEO will build trusting and collaborative relationships through genuine encounters with all agency stakeholders and community partners. The CEO will be a strong visionary, who is able to address emerging issues with flexibility and adaptability. The CEO will promote a culture of innovation to continue the JCC’s trajectory of growth, anticipating trends and identifying opportunities in the community.
Presents Visionary and Strategic Leadership
The CEO will promote an all-encompassing and compelling vision identifying key strategic opportunities which align with the JCC mission. The CEO will have the “big picture” in mind, effectively managing current issues, while incorporating long-term thinking in important agency decisions. Actively engaging Jewish and secular community organizations, the CEO will work to support existing collaborative programs and envision new ways to partner together.
Demonstrates Skill in Operational Management
The CEO will be responsible for day-to-day management of the JCC and will establish short- and long-term goals which are strategic, programmatic, fiscally responsible, and align with the JCC’s mission. The CEO will be accountable, and skillfully responsive to members, users, staff, Campus partners and other stakeholders. An understanding of the physical plant, technical support systems, and running the various businesses of the JCC is essential.
Displays Financial Acumen
The CEO will develop a realistic annual operating budget in partnership with the CFO, the Finance Committee and Board of Directors. The CEO will oversee and collaborate with the CFO on financial matters including long-term budgeting, ongoing financial performance, and financial strategy. The CEO must remain flexible, making necessary changes to ensure continues financial stability and sustainability.
Representing the Agency
The CEO will be a collaborative leader who is able to build strong partnerships in the Jewish and greater community. The CEO must understand the effective use of marketing and branding to interpret the JCC mission with all community stakeholders.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
· Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of executive leadership, strategic and operational management experience in JCCs (preferred, but not required), other Jewish organizations, business, or in the not-for-profit sector. An advanced degree is preferred.
· Proven ability to meaningfully engage with a wide range of core stakeholders and community partners, and drive change.
· Successful experience in developing a high-performing team which meets and exceeds planned outcomes.
· Ability to drive tactical and long-term strategies which are fiscally responsible and align with the JCC’s mission.
· Excellence in fiscal and organizational management.
· High energy, flexible, approachable, empathetic, and inspirational leader to staff, lay leaders, and other key stakeholders, and the ability to engage with a wide range of personalities and activities.
· A keen interest and understanding of Jewish culture, practices, and traditions.
· Authentic executive presence as internal and external face of the organization.
· Experience creating exceptional programming and services for all age groups.
· Appreciation for, and commitment to, diversity; works easily with people of all backgrounds and ages.
