Description

Position Overview:

The Evelyn Rubenstein JCC is seeking a responsible, organized, and basketball-savvy individual to serve as the Basketball Commissioner for our 35 and Up Men’s League (Mondays) and Open Men’s League (Wednesdays). This individual will ensure a safe, competitive, and enjoyable environment for all participants by managing league operations during game nights, enforcing rules, overseeing game staff, and fostering good sportsmanship.

Key Responsibilities:

League Oversight:

  • Serve as the on-site authority during league play.
  • Ensure games start and end on schedule.
  • Address and resolve in-game conflicts, rule disputes, and conduct issues.
  • Monitor compliance with league rules and JCC facility policies.

Staff Management:

  • Hire, train, and supervise league scorekeepers.
  • Recruit and coordinate qualified referees for each game night.
  • Manage staffing schedules, confirm attendance, and ensure all staff are equipped to perform their duties professionally.

Game Night Operations:

  • Oversee gym setup and takedown (e.g., scoreboard, benches, equipment).
  • Confirm presence and readiness of referees and scorekeepers prior to each game.
  • Track scores, standings, and player conduct for record-keeping and league updates.

Communication & Coordination:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for players, captains, and staff on game nights.
  • Provide weekly updates to the Sports & Recreation Director.
  • Communicate game results, schedule changes, and disciplinary actions as needed.

Sportsmanship & Conduct:

  • Promote and enforce good sportsmanship, player safety, and respectful conduct at all times.
  • Issue warnings, suspensions, or escalate incidents to ERJCC management as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and/or related software

  • Excellent organizational skills
