The Weinberg Center for Balanced Living (WCBL) is an innovative Older Adult Center serving adults ages 60 and older, whose primary languages include English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Russian. Integrated into EA’s Manny Cantor Center (MCC) and funded by the New York City Department for the Aging (NYC Aging), WCBL offers a holistic program designed to meet the varied needs, abilities, and interests of older adults. WCBL’s programs make it a premier destination for older New Yorkers, supporting physical and nutritional health, artistic development, cultural and social engagement, and providing critical social services that help members age in place with dignity.

We are seeking a full-time Food Service Manager who will oversee and actively participate in the Weinberg Center for Balanced Living (WCBL) older adult meal program, including breakfast, lunch, and take-home meal operations. Ensure efficient workflows, timely meal service, appropriate staff coverage, and adherence to food safety and program requirements established by the NYC Department for the Aging, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), HACCP, and other applicable federal, state, and local standards. The Food Service Manager will coordinate daily staffing and distribute responsibilities among food service staff, interns, and volunteers to maintain uninterrupted meal service. Manage the overall dining room environment, proactively engaging with older adult members, volunteers, internal and external partners, and other visitors. Additionally, this role will work cross-functionally with Older Adult Programs staff and other MCC departments, including Kitchen and Facilities staff and the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Manager, to coordinate food service operations, address equipment and building issues affecting food service areas, and support effective procurement and purchasing processes.

This position’s regular schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Occasional schedule flexibility or working of additional hours is required to supportrt WCBL’s contractual operating requirements and special events. This may include limited evening or weekend coverage for Cooling Center activations, special events programming, or to meet required annual operating days. Such schedule adjustments are infrequent, typically occurring no more than a few times per year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Meal Program Operations

• Oversee and actively participate in breakfast, lunch, and take-home meal service, including setup, serving, and cleanup, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely operations and a clean and welcoming dining environment.

• Work closely with MCC Kitchen to ensure sufficient food, tableware, and supplies are available and meals follow funder-approved menus and recipes, including required portions, substitutions, packaging, labeling, and reheating instructions.

• Respond to member feedback and work with program leadership, MCC Kitchen, Facilities, and other relevant departments to address meal service needs, concerns, and opportunities for improvement.

Staff, Intern, and Volunteer Supervision

• Supervise food service staff, interns, and volunteers, including scheduling and assigning responsibilities, providing guidance and feedback, and ensuring appropriate orientation and training on meal service, food safety, sanitation, hygiene, and program expectations.

• Partner with the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Manager to plan volunteer staffing and training for daily meal service and special events.

• Address routine staff and volunteer concerns and conflicts, keeping the WCBL Director and Volunteer and Civic Engagement Manager informed and collaborating on matters requiring additional follow-up.

Food Service Administration and Compliance

• Ensure compliance with NYC Aging, DOHMH, HACCP, USDA, and other applicable requirements related to food safety, sanitation, portioning, packaging, labeling, and documentation.

• Maintain required meal program records, including meal attendance, temperature and self-inspection logs, and inventory records, and count, reconcile, and document meal contributions in accordance with established procedures.

• Coordinate with the NYC Aging Nutrition Advisor and DOHMH during audits, inspections, and monitoring visits, and ensure findings and violations are addressed and corrective actions implemented in collaboration with appropriate MCC leadership and staff.

• Manage food service inventory, purchasing, deliveries, supplies, and expenses in collaboration with MCC program leadership and Kitchen staff to support daily operations and special events.

• Maintain safe, sanitary, and properly equipped food service areas and coordinate with MCC Facilities on maintenance, repairs, equipment, and building needs.

• Attend required NYC Aging, USDA, Educational Alliance, food safety, and other relevant trainings and meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

• At least four (4) years of food service experience, including supervising staff and/or volunteers and overseeing high-volume or institutional meal service operations

• Current NYC Food Protection Certificate (FPC) required. Must have the physical license in one’s possession.

• Current CPR/AED certification required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by Educational Alliance.

• Strong knowledge of food safety, sanitation, safe food handling, HACCP principles, and NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) requirements.

• Experience with food service inventory, purchasing, cost management, required documentation, and preparation for regulatory inspections or audits.

• Strong organizational, supervisory, and time-management skills, with the ability to coordinate daily operations, manage competing priorities, and provide clear direction to staff and volunteers.

• Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment, including the ability to address concerns, navigate conflicts, and respond professionally and appropriately to challenging behavior.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with members, volunteers, staff, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds; proficiency with standard office applications and ability to learn relevant electronic systems.

• Experience with NYC Aging nutrition and meal program requirements, Simple Servings, and/or food service programs serving older adults or other community-based populations is a plus.
