Job Position: MDS Coordinator (RN)

Pay Range: $66,495 – $99,742 annually
Job Type: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented MDS Coordinator (RN) to join our long-term care team. The MDS Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the resident assessment process, ensuring accurate and timely MDS submissions to federal and state agencies, coordinating reimbursement processes, and supporting quality resident care through interdisciplinary collaboration.

This position plays a critical role in compliance, reimbursement accuracy, care planning, and quality improvement initiatives within the facility.

Qualifications

  • Current RN licensure in the State of New York
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in long-term care
  • Minimum of one (1) year in a supervisory or management role
  • Minimum of two (2) years of MDS experience
  • Current MDS Certification required
  • AANAC membership preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid regulations and reimbursement systems
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Coordination

  • Supervise MDS staff and support facility Employee Health responsibilities
  • Provide RN Supervisor coverage and participate in on-call rotation
  • Chair weekly Medicare meetings and coordinate scorecard follow-up
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership, quality assurance, and staff education teams

MDS & Assessment Management

  • Ensure timely completion and submission of all federal and state assessment forms
  • Coordinate MDS schedules and communicate timelines to interdisciplinary teams
  • Ensure assessments are accurate, complete, and supported by medical documentation
  • Oversee PPS, quarterly, annual, readmission, and significant change assessments

Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to resident assessments
  • Conduct MDS audits and provide staff education as needed
  • Implement auditing processes and present findings to the QAPI committee
  • Maintain archived assessment data and documentation accessibility

Billing & Reimbursement

  • Collaborate with finance departments to support accurate billing processes
  • Review diagnosis coding and billing modifiers for Medicare Part A and Part B
  • Participate in “triple check” billing processes
  • Coordinate monthly billing data with rehabilitation management

Resident & Family Communication

  • Communicate with residents and families regarding payment status and billing rights
  • Coordinate appeals with regulatory agencies and insurance payers
  • Schedule and facilitate care conferences and Medicare rounds

  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and industry standards
  • Attend mandatory education and training sessions
  • Demonstrate professionalism, excellent customer service, and teamwork
  • Uphold residents’ rights and maintain respectful interactions with residents, families, and staff
