Beth El is a progressive, diverse, egalitarian, Conservative synagogue, located in dynamic ‘urban-suburban’ South Orange NJ. Beth El welcomes people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds to join us - learned and novice; born Jewish, Jew-by-choice, or non-Jew living Jewishly; single or partnered; gay or straight. Beth El is one of the fastest growing congregations in North America with over 400 family and individual members. We operate a preschool with 100 students, a Jewish Learning Center (religious school) with 180 students, and a teen program. Our lay leadership is passionately committed, working in close partnership with our professional team, contributing selflessly and generously to the vibrancy of synagogue life. Our vibrant and warm community expresses itself through worship and religious practice; social action, often in partnership with others seeking justice locally and nationally; caring and compassion for those in need; and Jewish learning at every stage of life. Beth El is deeply committed to the South Orange-Maplewood community and our neighbors, often collaborating with other local faith communities to meet pressing needs. Rabbis Jesse Olitzky and Rachel Marder serve as Beth El’s innovative spiritual leaders. Rabbi Olitzky, who has served in his role since 2014, has been named on The Forward’s list of “America’s Most Inspiring Rabbis,” and is the recipient of a Jewish Organizing Institute & Network (JOIN) Fellowship for community organizing. Rabbi Marder joined Beth El in 2018 and has brought new spiritual and intellectual depth to our programs and ritual life.
