-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Congregation Bet Ha’am (CBH), a Reform Jewish congregation located in South Portland, Maine and serving 340 family units, seeks an Executive Director (ED) to work with its Board of Trustees, Rabbi and Education Director, and oversee a dedicated and experienced support staff. Since its creation in 1985, CBH has been an open-door community for Jewish ritual, connection and engagement. As CBH enters its fifth decade, it looks to upgrade its lead administrative position, seeking an ED whose primarily responsibilities will be revenue enhancement and membership growth and engagement.

The ED will work in collaboration with the Board of Trustees and the Rabbi to advance the mission of CBH to serve as a “welcoming Reform Jewish community providing vision, voice, and opportunity for connecting to, practicing and sustaining Judaism.

In partnership with the Board, the ED will also lead the development of a strategic plan that charts a clear and compelling path for the Congregation’s future. This ED should be an experienced, skilled fund development professional, eager to introduce new energy, ideas, and systems to CBH development efforts.

Serving as the primary outward-facing administrative leader, the Executive Director will cultivate relationships across the Southern Maine community, elevating the Congregation’s visibility and advancing opportunities for meaningful community engagement and impact. They will act as a welcoming, thoughtful, and strategic leader – an ambassador for new members, and knowledgeable resource for congregational members and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Revenue Enhancement:

In partnership with the Board of Trustees, grow CBH revenues through the following:

· Strategize alongside, and support Board efforts to increase congregational participation in CBH’s annual fund.

· Support a newly created endowment campaign committee, in collaboration with campaign consultants and lay leadership.

· Improve systems/oversight of membership dues, religious school fee collections and other revenue streams.

· Research and apply for potential grant funds to support operations and programs.

· Oversee efforts with staff to grow rental income.

Membership Growth and Engagement:

· Work with the membership committee to establish a goal for net membership increases and a plan to achieve that goal.

· Work with the Board and various committees to increase congregational engagement and participation at CBH services and programs, through improved messaging to congregants and improved welcoming efforts.

· Supporting Board efforts to establish a Brotherhood and Sisterhood.

Financial:

· Work with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to develop, monitor, and manage the annual budget, with the goal of operating on a balanced budget.

· Collaborate with CBH finance staff and the Finance Committee to prepare accurate monthly financial reports and projections.

· Partner with the Finance and Development Committees, as part of the strategic planning process, to create and advance a multi-year plan that moves the Congregation toward financial sustainability and out of a deficit position over the next three to five years.

Personnel:

· Serve as a reliable, supportive, and collaborative leader to the CBH staff of 5, primarily part-time team members, recognizing and valuing individual skills and expertise, fostering shared learning, and contributing their own knowledge and experience.

· Provide oversight of CBH administrative and support staff to ensure effective, efficient, and well-coordinated operations.

· Lead an annual staff evaluation process that values the perspectives of all staff members, supports professional growth, and reinforces accountability and excellence in programs and operations.

· Manage and guide future search and hiring needs.

Leadership:

· Set a tone of professionalism, supportive leadership, and strategic vision, serving as a reliable and trusted resource for the Board, clergy, staff team, and the broader congregational community.

· Work closely with the Officers and Trustees of CBH, attend monthly Board meetings, and serve as the primary liaison between the Board and staff.

· Partner collaboratively with the Rabbi to oversee operations and programs in a way that supports and protects the Rabbi’s ability to carry out spiritual, pastoral, and communal responsibilities, free from day-to-day administrative burden.

· Collaborate with the Education Director to ensure that the religious school programs best serve the needs of CBH’s students and families.

· Share oversight of religious school operations and communications to ensure volunteer teachers feel heard, supported, and valued, and that program logistics are well-managed and aligned with member needs.

Required:

· 10+ years of experience in nonprofit organizational leadership.

· A meaningful understanding of and respect for Jewish values and traditions.

· Proven track record in revenue development including annual fund management and growth, major gifts, membership dues and fee structure development and oversight, events, grants, and fee for service strategies and management.

· Ability to collaborate effectively with the Board, the Rabbi, and CBH committees in a shared leadership environment.

· Ability and willingness to work on Jewish religious holidays including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, as well as on occasional Shabbat programs as well.

· Demonstrates a steady, respected presence within a diverse and engaged congregation, able to build trust, navigate differing perspectives, and lead with professionalism, empathy, and good humor.

· Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and supervise support staff with practicality, compliance knowledge, empathy, and care – in accordance with CBH organizational values.

· Demonstrated ability to track, troubleshoot and grow CBH annual budget, in collaboration with Treasurer and Finance Committee.

· Comfortable and confident with everyday professional technology, including Microsoft 365, Zoom, and shared document platforms; able to learn and use new systems efficiently

· Ability to oversee and attend evening and weekend programming.

Preferred:

· Programmatic and/or leadership experience within Jewish communal organization or congregation

· Experience with NEON and/or other CRM systems

· Masters level degree in organizational development, Jewish communal service, nonprofit management, or similar area of expertise.
