Job Summary:

The Janitorial/Maintenance Team Member is a full-time/part-time professional position responsible for the janitorial services and maintenance of the synagogue building and property. This role performs custodial and light maintenance duties to ensure the smooth operation of the congregation.

This position is supervised by and directly accountable to the Director of Operations. The individual must work cooperatively as a positive member of the Agudas Achim team alongside clergy, other professionals, support staff, caterers, and outside vendors.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of general janitorial duties along with basic building maintenance skills. They should also understand organizational principles and how this role supports other synagogue functions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain the building and grounds in a safe, clean, and orderly condition, including furnishings and equipment
• Perform routine cleaning of all areas including offices, sanctuary, classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and common spaces
• Ensure exterior areas (entries, parking lot, walkways) are clean and free of debris
• Set up, break down, and clean facilities for weekday services, weekend services, religious school, and special events
• Inspect facilities before and after major functions
• Monitor and check building systems daily to ensure proper operation
• Perform general handyman and maintenance tasks (e.g., minor repairs, light replacements)
• Ensure all programming and events are properly supported with room setup and cleanliness
• Be available on-site for major activities and accessible 24/7 for building emergencies
• Work collaboratively with staff, clergy, vendors, and event personnel
• Represent the synagogue with professionalism, warmth, and a caring, community-oriented spirit
• Complete additional duties and assignments as needed

Qualifications:

• Experience in janitorial or maintenance work preferred
• Basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, tools, and maintenance techniques
• Ability to perform minor repairs and use basic hand tools
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Bilingual preferred

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to perform physical labor including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying items up to 50 lbs
• Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
• Must be able to tolerate working in high temperatures and physically demanding environments
• Must be able to operate basic cleaning equipment and tools safely

Educational Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Safety Requirements:

• Must learn and follow all company and OSHA safety rules and regulations
• Must be able to understand and properly use cleaning chemicals, tools, and equipment in a safe manner
• Must comply with all workplace safety procedures to maintain a safe environment for staff and visitors
