ABOUT THE ROLE

To continue advancing the impact we have across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring a Senior Counselor situated within the Summer of Arts and Sports Day Camp. The Summer of Arts and Sports Day Camp plays a vital role in creating a positive summer experience for the youth of Forest Hills. The individual hired as Senior Counselor will lead and supervise a group of campers, supporting the Unit Head in daily operations and ensuring a safe, structured, and engaging environment. They will actively participate in programming, assist with activity planning, and serve as a strong role model for both campers and junior staff. This role reports directly to the Unit Head and Camp Directors.

Across the agency, our seasonal and part-time staff play a crucial role in driving our initiatives forward by supporting daily operations, program delivery, and organizational goals.


ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Agency Expectations

  • Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, while following established processes and contributing to basic data collection, reporting, or documentation as required.

  • Use agency resources responsibly by following established procedures, safeguarding equipment and materials, and/or supporting cost-effective operations.

  • Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross-department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.

  • Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.

Role Expectations

  • Lead, supervise, and guide a group of campers, maintaining awareness of camper whereabouts at all times.

  • Serve as a mature, caring role model and prioritize campers’ needs at all times.

  • Communicate camper concerns (behavioral, physical, or other) to the Unit Head.

  • Work collaboratively with the Unit Head to support a well-balanced weekly program based on camp themes.

  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for campers of all abilities.

  • Attend and participate in all camp activities, including orientations, meetings, trips, and staff events.

  • Maintain strong attendance and punctuality; arrive on time and remain until dismissed by leadership.

  • Assist specialists with activities and maintain group control during programming.

  • Supervise daily routines including lunch and transitions.

  • Be prepared to participate in and supervise daily swimming activities; must enter the water during swim time.

  • Remain responsible and attentive during scheduled field trips.

  • Maintain awareness of camper medical needs, including allergies and required medications.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding camper and staff matters.

  • Ensure campers respect camp property and prevent misuse or damage of equipment and facilities.

  • Adhere to all camp policies, including no use of cell phones or smartwatches during camp hours.

  • Maintain a professional attitude at all times.


QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

  • Prior experience working with children required.

  • Ability to swim and supervise children in a pool environment daily.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience as a camp counselor.

  • Previous experience in a Commonpoint role is a plus.

  • Bilingual Preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS & JOB DETAILS

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Environment: Primarily indoors in a camp facility, with regular outdoor activities including playground time and scheduled swimming sessions.

  • Exposures: Exposure to typical indoor and outdoor conditions, including moderate noise levels from children and staff, and seasonal weather during outdoor activities (heat, sun, or light rain).

  • Essential Physical Requirements: Ability to actively engage with children, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, and participating in recreational activities. Must be able to supervise children in and around water and participate in swimming activities.

  • Physical Effort/Lifting: Light physical effort required; ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.

  • Work Schedule: Regular daytime hours, typically 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. No late nights required. Occasional weekend work may be required depending on camp programming.

  • Travel Requirements: Occasional local travel for off-site field trips; no overnight travel required
