STATEMENT OF THE JOB
MINIMUM DESCRIPTION
Commonpoint is a non-profit, multi-service agency with flagship sites in Little Neck, Bayside, Forest Hills, East Elmhurst, Jamaica, and Bronx Center, with 80 additional sites throughout the community that provide a diverse array of programs and services to over 85,000 individuals. Program Overview:
The STEM Instructor will report to the Senior Director of High School and College Success and lead immersive, project-based programming in 3D Design, Game Development, Digital Media, and Emerging Technologies. Through large-group workshops and small cohort instruction, the Instructor will build technical competencies, strengthen problem-solving and collaboration skills, and connect youth to high- growth STEM careers, postsecondary pathways, and industry-aligned opportunities.
In addition to Youth Hub-based programming, the STEM Instructor will support MBK Challenge initiatives by delivering STEM enrichment services to students at Frederick Douglass Academy VI, Academy of Medical Technology, Rockaway Collegiate High School, and Rockaway Park High School for Environmental Sustainability. This multi-site role will strengthen cross-school collaboration and expand access to technology-driven learning, helping build a structured pipeline from high school exploration to college, certification, and workforce readiness.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Game Design, Digital Media, Technology Education, or a related STEM field (relevant professional experience may substitute).
● Demonstrated experience teaching, facilitating, or leading STEM-based youth programs.
● Technical proficiency in at least two of the following: 3D Modeling Software (Tinkercad, Fusion 360, Blender), Game Development Platforms (Unity, Unreal Engine, Scratch, Roblox Studio), Coding Languages (Python, JavaScript, C#), AR/VR fundamentals, Digital design software (Adobe Suite or similar).
● Experience with project-based learning and portfolio development.
● Strong classroom management, facilitation, and youth engagement skills.
● Ability to connect technical instruction to workforce development and college pathways.
● Commitment to Commonpoint’s holistic and strength-based approach to human development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Design and facilitate STEM-based programming focused on 3D Design and Modeling, Game Development, Digital Media & Interactive Technology, and Introductory AR/VR.
● Lead both large group workshops (20–30 participants) and small cohort-based classes (8–15 participants).
● Develop project-based curricula culminating in tangible products such as prototypes, playable games, 3D printed models, or digital portfolios.
● Integrate career exploration into instruction, connecting STEM skills to real-life career pathways.
● Connect participants to postsecondary programs, certification pathways, internships, and workforce opportunities.
● Coordinate guest speakers from industry and higher education institutions.
● Support youth in building technical portfolios aligned with college and career goals.
● Maintain safe supervision of participants and manage conflicts using de-escalation techniques when necessary.
● Track attendance, monitor skill progression, and maintain program data.
● Collaborate with college access, workforce development, and enrichment staff.
● Maintain and manage technology equipment, including 3D printers, computers, VR headsets, and software licenses.
● Provide structured, inclusive, and culturally responsive programming environments.
● Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
● Support participants and families with referrals to community resources when appropriate.
● Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
