Youth Leader - Flushing High School
STATEMENT OF THE AGENCY:
Commonpoint is a multifaceted community center dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the quality of individual, family, and communal life throughout New York City, offering services to people of all ages, ability levels, stages of life, and backgrounds. They strive to meet the evolving needs of their community of over 100,000 members, ranging from providing in-school and after-school programs, professional and career development, assistance with food insecurity, legal services, financial counseling, mental health services, senior classes, dementia care programs, and tax preparation assistance, to name a few. Commonpoint has grown tremendously in the last five years and now has a mission-driven staff of 3,000 and over 80 sites in the five boroughs.
STATEMENT OF THE POSITION
Within our framework of a holistic, strength-focused, and family-supported practice, an individual hired as a Youth Leader will report to the Director, Student Success Center. The positions will take place within the Flushing High School Campus.
Qualifications
● Working Papers
● On track to graduate and high academic attendance
● Motivated, responsible, and hardworking team player that is willing to learn and work well with students and staff
● Written recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor
● Committed to attending college
● Bilingual preferred
Responsibilities
● Provide peer-to-peer college counseling during lunch, advisory, and/or after school hours
● Create and deliver workshops around college access (grades 9-12)
● Actively participate in weekly staff meetings after school
● Attend the Youth Leader Summer Institute and Conferences throughout the year
● Conduct outreach and recruitment regarding college services, trips, and events
● Complete all necessary paperwork and data entry to ensure high quality counseling
● Serve as a constant positive representative of the Student Success Center/College Office
● Work 10 hours per week
● Other duties as assigned
General Tasks of All Commonpoint Staff
● Promote and implement the Core Values of the Community Center.
● Participation in all staff meetings and staff training seminars.
● Participation in agency-wide programs and program committees, as assigned.
● Active involvement as a supervisee in the supervision process.
● Support the mission of the Commonpoint.
● Other tasks appropriate to the Commonpoint staff, as assigned.
Salary Range: $16.50 an hour
Commonpoint reserves the right to revise or change job duties and responsibilities as needed.
