Columbus Torah Academy is seeking a dynamic leader for the position of Chief Financial Officer.

CTA’s administration includes a Head of School, Lower School Principal (K-6), Upper School Principal (7-12), Judaic Studies Principal, and Hebrew Language Department Chair (K-12), Marketing and Development Director, and Executive Secretary who all report to the Head of School. The Chief Financial Officer supervises all accounting and financial functions, provides Board of Directors and the organization’s management team with relevant financial data necessary for budgetary and financial decisions and oversees the various operations of the organization including but not necessarily limited to facility safety, security, utilization and maintenance, management of the organization’s employee health and benefit plans, assuring compliance with state and accrediting standards for schools, management of human resources including payroll processing, assuring acknowledgement and appropriate record keeping for donated funds, oversight of audits, administration of the organization’s tuition subsidy program, and general oversight of the organization’s equipment, building, and grounds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has significant authority and oversight responsibilities in six primary areas:
- Budgeting, accounting and financial planning
- Facilities management and planning
- Human resources including payroll and benefits management
- Supervision of personnel
- Compliance with legal and certification/accreditation requirements
- Cash flow and management
- Sit on the School Board as a non-voting member
- Member of Finance Team & Administrative L10 Team
- Sit on the Endowment Investment Committee as a non voting member
As such, the person in the position is expected to:
- Assure the fiduciary responsibility required of 501c3 organizations is carried out through all financial aspects that are under his/her control.
- Obtain departmental and management input and develop annual and special budgets for presentation to the Board of Directors and management team.
- Prepare routine and special purpose financial reports and analysis for the Board of Directors and management team.
- Assure all external reports, taxes and other withholdings are completed and submitted in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Assure all financial records and reports are in compliance with GAAP standards and meet additional requirements imposed by state and/or certifying/accrediting bodies.
- Assure the appropriate records are kept for donations and contributions.
- Prepare annual audit work papers, work with financial auditors, and assure the records fulfill standards to receive an unqualified audit including preparation of Form 990.
- Supervise personnel assisting with accounting duties.
- Negotiate vendor and contractor rates and pursue purchasing affiliations to assure best prices.
- Oversee and periodically adjust all insurance programs including but not limited to property, liability and worker’s compensation, health insurance, dental plans, life insurance and long-term disability insurance.
- Maintain a relationship with a qualified broker for maintaining and oversight of the 403(b) retirement plan including preparation of the Form 5500.
- Maintain and process all accounts payable and accounts receivable and assure accurate projections of cash flow; assure funds are appropriately transferred to cover payroll and other accounts payable.
- Administer the tuition financial assistance program by assuring the decisions of the Scholarship Committee are implemented and maintained under strict confidentiality.
- Seek out and participate in writing, obtaining, and tracking grants that will serve the school in applicable areas.
- Maintain asset inventories.
- Supervise Facilities Manager plus maintenance/custodial personnel to ensure buildings are well maintained in a safe and clean condition.
- Prepare analyses and opinions for the Board of Directors and the organization’s management team regarding finances, physical plant, safety, donations and fundraising programs.
- Complete other duties as assigned and needed to ensure smooth operations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (or Accounting and Finance), Master’s degree in accounting a plus and CPA preferred with at least five (5) years' prior experience as a Chief Financial Officer for a nonprofit organization, school, or public accountant; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least three years prior experience in a supervisory position
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Current knowledge of school safety and facility requirements or ability to quickly learn them upon hire
- Demonstrated ability to analyze operations and create recommendations to enhance performance
- Knowledge of current nonprofit tax laws, and school funding requirements or ability to quickly learn them upon hire
- Ability to plan and organize effective systems to manage high volumes of activity
- Knowledge of best practices in facilities management (prior school facility management experience preferred)
- Knowledge of best practices in school purchasing (prior experience with school purchasing systems within Ohio is preferred)
- Thorough knowledge of payroll processing and knowledge of all applicable laws , regulations, and tax filings
- Ability to work within a traditional Orthodox Jewish environment
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to read, write and speak English
- Proficiency in; Microsoft products including Word and Excel, Google suite, and Quickbooks is a must. Knowledge of FACTS tuition management, Donor Snap, and iSolved a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to be self directed -- position requires reliability, consistency, leadership, ability to make and implement decisions, and good follow-through
- Demonstrated ability to know when information is confidential and to maintain strict confidentiality
- Must have transportation available for occasional local travel
- Must have demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate and retrievable records of all organizational activities
- Must be able to pass a rigorous background check to work within a school setting
- Must be able to work effectively with many people both internally and externally
TYPICAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS OF POSITION
- Position is housed in a routine office environment located within a school and is subject to a high volume of interruptions and incumbent must be able to respond appropriately
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear, and reach with hands and arms and work with keyboards, copiers, phones and other office equipment for extended periods at a basic level
- Work long periods with a computer and looking at computer screen, data, and database reports
- Ability to lift and carry routine office supplies and equipment generally not exceeding 20 pounds
- Must be available to work extended hours on occasion to accommodate special events
- Position requires occasional out of office travel for community meetings and special events
- Able to travel independently within the building and the community to attend various meetings and events
- Must use independent judgment to make decisions when addressing complex issues with volunteers and co-workers
- Communicate orally with a broad range of people in face-to-face and group settings
- Maintain a professional demeanor in the face of sometimes stressful circumstances
