Director of Communications

The Claims Conference is looking for a Director of Communications. The ideal candidate will leverage existing relationships with international media/press to highlight the work of the Claims Conference, has excellent project management skills, and can effectively implement the strategic plan of the Communications department.

Note: this is a hybrid position with a minimum of two days in the office.

The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference), a nonprofit organization with offices in New York, Israel, Germany and Austria, secures material compensation for Holocaust survivors around the world. Founded in 1951 by representatives of 23 major international Jewish organizations, the Claims Conference negotiates for and disburses funds to individual survivors and organizations and seeks the return of Jewish property stolen during the Holocaust. As a result of negotiations with the Claims Conference since 1952, the German government has paid more than $95 billion in indemnification to individuals for suffering and losses resulting from persecution by the Nazis. In 2025, the Claims Conference distributed approximately $530 million in compensation for survivors globally and $960 million for survivors’ welfare needs such as home care, medicine and food.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with Communications staff and Chief Communications Officer (CCO) to create and implement story pitches to U.S. and International press;
  • Supporting the CCO and Claims Conference staff to implement communications strategy to highlight work in the U.S. and abroad;
  • Collaborating with the Communications team to establish robust media contacts highlighting Claims Conference stories;
  • Working with CCO and internal Claims Conference staff on communications material to facilitate new messaging;
  • Responding to press inquiries alongside CCO and Communications team;
  • Initiating and writing materials relating to Claims Conference programs and projects;
  • Working with Claims Conference leadership on messaging and thought leadership content;
  • Interviewing survivors receiving services and/or payments funded by the Claims Conference and develop stories to help shape Claims Conference messaging;
  • Interviewing individuals and institutions connected with programs funded by the Claims Conference;
  • Managing Communications staff in the hiring of photographers and videographers around the world to photograph/film Holocaust survivors and those working with the Claims Conference programs;
  • Supervising the interview and/or photograph/video process;
  • Working with outside partners on messaging and communications projects;
  • Working with CCO and Claims Conference staff to collate content for printed materials;
  • Working with Communications team to develop social media content;
  • Editing and revising Claims Conference written materials when needed;
  • Verifying accuracy of materials disseminated by the Communications Department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education, i.e., 5 years related experience;
  • Knowledge of principles/practices of journalism and public relations;
  • Strong relationships with journalists/press/media;
  • Understanding pitching and presenting to media;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Effective interviewer;
  • Strong research and information-gathering skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to analyze and assimilate information from a variety of sources;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task.

Claims Conference offers generous benefits, opportunities for professional growth, and competitive salaries based on geographic location. Our target salary range for Director of Communications in the New York City market is $195,000-$210,000. This salary range represents Claims Conference’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. The final salary for this role will be determined based on careful consideration of a variety of factors, such as the candidate’s exact location, experience in similar roles, and expertise related to the qualifications.
