Overview:
Central Synagogue is one of the leading and largest Reform congregations in the country. Located in Midtown Manhattan, Central’s reach includes more than 3,400 member families, a livestream community numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and more than 800 students, from birth to twelfth grade, in the Nursery and Religious schools. Central's operations include a pre-school, camp, religious services and programming on Shabbat and Jewish holidays, a religious school, a wide variety of adult programming, as well as social justice work including programs supporting criminal justice reform and food insecurity. These activities take place on an urban campus that includes a 150+ year old landmarked sanctuary building, a nine-story Community House, and ancillary rented office space.

Job Summary/Objective:
Central Synagogue’s Facilities team is responsible for ensuring that the organization’s MEP and other physical infrastructure is well-maintained, its properties are safe, in good repair, organized, and function smoothly throughout a complex schedule of daily classes, meetings, ceremonies and events. The ideal candidate has strong, diverse maintenance skills, excellent troubleshooting abilities, and provides exceptional service to the building needs.
Reports to: Senior Manager of Maintenance and Engineering
Department Hours:
- Shift hours will be determined by current staffing needs
- Full-time, Non-Exempt and eligible for OT over 40 hours per week with the supervisor’s approval
- Will be required to work the Jewish High Holy Days (Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidrei, and Yom Kippur) and other special events/programs from time to time
- Availability for longer shifts, weekends, and holidays is often required, including infrequent overnight shifts

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions:
Your responsibilities as a Maintenance Worker may include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine repairs (such as patching, painting, ceiling tiles replacement, replacing door hardware or locks)
- Perform basic electrical (outlets, light fixtures, ballasts) and plumbing (faucets, toilets, flushometers) repairs
- Maintain a safe and organized workspace, adhering to OSHA regulations
- Perform regular preventative maintenance of mechanical spaces and systems and assist with upkeep of common areas as needed
- Document completed tasks and report necessary larger repairs
- Troubleshoot and fix issues in classrooms, offices and public spaces
- Install doors, moldings and basic flooring and other simple carpentry tasks
- Assist with snow removal
- Conduct daily walk-throughs of building spaces, addressing issues and deficiencies when possible and escalating them when needed
- Interact professionally with staff members, teachers and supervisors
- With or without reasonable accommodation, requires the physical and mental capacity to perform effectively all essential functions, which may include, but are not limited to:
- Lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing
- Wearing uniform and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Requirements:
- 3+ years of experience as a handyman/maintenance technician, ideally in a commercial, office, or school setting
- Must be proficient with a comprehensive set of hand and power tools
- Proficiency in plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting
- Knowledge of NYC commercial building codes and safety regulations
- A friendly, efficient, positive customer service demeanor towards Central Synagogue’s members, guests, and co-workers
- Ability to remain positive, calm and work independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment
- Must be able to communicate effectively and use technology (smartphone/app) for work orders
