Overview
Central Synagogue is one of the leading and largest Reform congregations in the country. Located in Midtown Manhattan, Central’s reach includes more than 3,400 member families, a livestream community numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and more than 800 students, from birth to twelfth grade, in the Nursery and Religious schools. Central's operations include a pre-school, camp, religious services and programming on Shabbat and Jewish holidays, a religious school, a wide variety of adult programming, as well as social justice work including programs supporting criminal justice reform and food insecurity. These activities take place on an urban campus that includes a 150+ year old landmarked sanctuary building, a nine-story Community House, and ancillary rented office space.

Job Summary/Objective:
Central Synagogue’s Breakfast Program team is responsible for the day-to-day operations of our breakfast program, providing hot meals and to-go sandwiches to guests outside of the sanctuary every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday morning. As a Breakfast Program Staff worker on our team, you’ll receive and manage food inventory, assist with kitchen prep and cooking, and handle kitchen cleaning and maintenance work.
Reports to: Breakfast Program Manager
Department Hours:
- Monday & Wednesday 6:00 am-2:00 pm – Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 3:00 am-11:00 am or equivalent, as assigned by Breakfast Program Manager
- Full-time, Non-Exempt and eligible for OT over 40 hours per week with the supervisor’s approval.
- Will be required to work the Jewish High Holy Days (Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidrei, and Yom Kippur) and other special events/programs from time to time.
- Availability for longer shifts, weekends, and holidays is sometimes required

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Your responsibilities as a Breakfast Program Worker may include, but are not limited to:
- Receiving & Storage
- Receive all food and supply deliveries
- Verify quantities and quality of delivered items
- Maintain organization in refrigerators, freezers, and dry storage areas, properly storing all products using FIFO (first-in, first-out) rotation
- Maintain accurate inventory and report low-stock items to Manager
- Kitchen Setup & Breakdown
- Set up and break down food prep stations, restocking as needed
- Food Preparation and Packaging
- Chop, portion, label, and store ingredients as needed
- Assemble and/or prepare daily meals according to recipes and production schedules
- Assist with portioning or packaging meals for service
- Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean and sanitize prep surfaces, equipment, utensils, and work areas
- Take out trash, recycling, and compost as required
- Ensure all kitchen equipment is in good working order and report issues promptly to Manager

Qualifications:
- Previous food service experience preferred; valid NYC Food Protection Certificate is a plus
- Able to follow basic safety procedures and precautions due to physical risks and exposure to hazardous chemicals
- A friendly, efficient, positive customer service demeanor towards Central Synagogue’s members, guests, co-workers
- Ability to remain positive, calm and work independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment
- English proficiency very strongly preferred

The expected salary range for this position is $21.00-$23.00 per hour. Central Synagogue offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community. The salary is commensurate with experience based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. The above salary range represents the Synagogue’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation range at the time of posting.
