About ALEPH ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal is a transdenominational movement dedicated to infusing spiritual vitality, authenticity, healing, and passion into daily Jewish  life. We achieve this through innovative training, impactful programs, and experiential retreats. Our enriching events empower leadership, foster multiracial and multicultural communities, and create transformative experiences. The ALEPH Ordination Program (AOP), the organization’s flagship program, is recognized as one of the leading Jewish seminaries. The AOP trains and ordains rabbis, cantors, rabbinic pastors, and spiritual directors from diverse backgrounds, and lived experiences, representing nearly every denomination to serve the global Jewish community with the goal of enhancing and revitalizing Judaism.

Position Overview The Executive Director (ED) will serve as the chief executive of ALEPH, providing visionary leadership and strategic direction to fulfill the organization’s mission. This full-time position will oversee a dedicated team of six professionals and collaborate closely with a volunteer Board of Directors. The ED will manage and grow ALEPH’s annual budget of more than $2 million, working with the AOP Deans, project directors, teachers, and partners to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

Core Responsibilities

  • Vision and Leadership: Provide visionary leadership that inspires and motivates staff, board, and community stakeholders, while serving as the public face and chief advocate for Jewish Renewal.
  • Strategic Planning: Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans that resonate with Jewish values and align with ALEPH’s mission of spiritual renewal and community building. Regularly assess organizational goals and adjust as necessary to ensure continued relevance and effectiveness, fostering a culture of experimentation and continuous growth.
  • Operational Management: Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization, ensuring efficient and effective execution of ALEPH’s programs and services, operating in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Foster a heart-centered, mission-focused culture: Exemplify and nurture empathy, authentic connection, and compassion, a culture that embraces learning, personal growth, prudent risk-taking, and collective problem-solving — all underpinned by a commitment to Jewish teachings and practices.
  • Financial Oversight: Monitor financial health, manage budgets, and ensure financial sustainability. Collaborate with the Board and the Finance Manager to develop financial strategies, including diversification of revenue streams.
  • Fundraising and Development: Work closely with the Development Director to secure general operating funds and targeted grants. Create and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, establishing measurable goals and timelines to support ALEPH’s initiatives.
  • Community Engagement: Cultivate strong relationships with ALEPH’s member network, partners, and the broader Jewish community. Actively engage in outreach efforts to promote collaboration, ensuring that diverse voices within Jewish Renewal are embraced, and that ALEPH serves as a meaningful hub for Jewish communal life.
  • Board Collaboration: Work closely with the Board of Directors and others to strengthen governance, refine organizational practices, revise ethics policies, and ensure effective engagement.
  • Seminary Integration: Interface on an ongoing basis with the AOP Dean, who has operational responsibility for the AOP and who reports to the AOP Governors.
  • Staff Development: Support and mentor staff, fostering professional growth and development. Encourage a collaborative and inclusive team environment that attracts and retains people while driving the organization’s mission.
  • Human Resources: Oversee human resources functions including staff recruitment, performance management, policy development, and compliance with employment regulations.
  • Communication: Create compelling content for various platforms to engage ALEPH’s stakeholders and attract potential supporters. Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, promoting ALEPH’s mission and innovative programs.

Reporting Structure: This position reports to ALEPH’s Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required: advanced degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of successful experience in nonprofit management. Demonstrated leadership in the Jewish community or similar organizations.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with organizational goals and values.
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial management.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in fundraising and donor relations, with a track record of securing major gifts and grants from both individuals and foundations. Familiarity with Jewish philanthropy initiatives is a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team.
  • Highly organized, proactive, adaptable, and able to manage multiple projects in dynamic environments.
  • Ability to hold the vision for the organization and also understand the granular issues.
  • Confidence and maturity in dealing with clergy and lay leadership.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with geographically dispersed management is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in using technology and software for communication, data management, and financial oversight.
  • Familiarity with Jewish customs, values, and traditions – especially the creativity, inspiration, and rituals re-invigorated by Reb Zalman, z”l and other Jewish Renewal luminary teachings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inner development and thorough understanding of emotional intelligence.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $110,000-$130,000
  • Benefits: Ten (10) days paid vacation, technology stipend, paid time off for Jewish and secular holidays, health insurance, and professional development/training opportunities.
